Sedna: A Goddess Gets New Life
The Llewellyn Journal

We all have stories locked up inside of us, secrets we feel we can never tell. These may be deeply wounding stories and secrets. In order to be fair to ourselves, we may need to discover if one of the best ways we can obtain healing for those stories and secrets is to acknowledge them, speak them, and release them. If we lack the courage to do so, we can look to the heavens, to find a way out of our internal dilemma and distress. There up in the galaxy, we can find our guide, our star that will help us blaze our way out of the darkness, and into the light.
To name something is to give it an identity. Sedna, a minor planet, is classified as asteroid number 90377, and was discovered on November 13, 2003, and officially named on October 27, 2004. That date puts her identity firmly in the time of Scorpio, in the part of the year that traditionally deals with the darker side of life, and of our souls. Once you become familiar with Sedna’s story, and of what she means symbolically, you will see the synchronicity of the date of her discovery, and how appropriate it is. Scorpio is the sign opposite Taurus, the sign Sedna is in. So there is a symbiosis that takes place between Scorpio and Taurus.
Synchronicity, as Carl Jung’s theory goes, brings together psyche and substance, i.e. mind and matter, at a suitable time for both an individual and the universe as a whole. Jung was a psychologist who did his client’s horoscopes before meeting with them for analysis. He felt that all things in the cosmos tie in together in a metaphysical way.
Sedna, according to Inuit myth, is the goddess of the sea, and all sea animals, and she resides at the bottom of the icy Arctic Ocean. Sedna’s story is not a pretty one. She was given by her father in marriage to a man who appeared to be good and kind, but when she left her village to go to his, he revealed himself to be not a man, but a bird, a raven, and a cruel one at that. Sedna’s father heard her cries across the waters, and went to retrieve her from her unhappy marriage.
While Sedna and her father were paddling in their kayak to get back to their village, her husband flew after them, transforming himself into the raven manifestation she knew and feared, and by flapping his wings caused a huge storm to take place. Terrified of dying, Sedna’s father threw her overboard, in hopes the raven would go after Sedna, and leave him alone. Sedna attempted to hold onto the kayak, but her father dismembered her grasping fingers so she would lose her grip. Sedna sank to the bottom of the ocean, and drowned. Sedna then became the ruler of the waters, and her fragmented and severed fingers transformed into seals, otters and other sea animals.
Sedna’s story of survival after terrible abuse is a symbolic testament to the eons of people who have had the same experience, in their own way, and in their own situations. Seeing Sedna simply as a victim and bemoaning her horrific treatment is not where this myth takes us. By not minimizing her suffering, by acknowledging her terrible treatment, we then see her metamorphosis into a sea goddess, one who can even in her abashed state bring life. Suffering, death and rebirth as a goddess is Sedna’s story, and in it many women can find a figurative analogy for their own lives.
Sedna can teach us that we can transform ourselves and survive. Sedna has entered our mainstream of thought process now and will continue to, instructing us about our lives during our sojourn here on earth. How does this relate to us, and our current life path?
Sedna is currently in the sign of Taurus and will be until 2023, when she enters Gemini. Since Sedna spends such a long time in each sign, (for over 50 years) the degree she is currently inhabiting is more important to an individual chart of analysis then the sign itself, which is of overall worldly impact. In essence it is a mini version of an epochal age, as in the age of Pisces, which we are leaving, or age of Aquarius, which we are entering, though on a much smaller scale of course.
The degree Sedna is now in is between 19 to 20 degrees of Taurus, and that will be true until February of 2010. Taurus is one of the signs of Spring. Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, it comes after Aries, the quintessence of new birth. Taurus is the sign of the gardener, since by the time we get to Taurus our gardens have been planted, and we are now tending them, and they are starting to bloom. Taurus is the green sign, it is the sign of plants, flowers, herbs, and of the earth itself.
Sedna is in Aries for anyone born from January 1900 till February of 1968, when it entered into Taurus full time. Anyone born during the months of July or August of 1965, May to November 1966, or April to December 1967 has Sedna in Taurus instead of Aries. Any child born from now until 2023 will have Sedna in Taurus. That means that Sedna is associated with new births and new beginnings for everyone in this time period. Sedna’s story of being horribly abused is one that needs to find release, for both herself and for the myriads of people who share her odyssey. Victims of childhood sexual and physical abuse are now able to tell their tales and obtain freedom from the bondage of shame that may have trapped them for years.
Every time a faster moving planet or luminary, i.e. the Moon or the Sun, impacts on the current degree of Sedna it will trigger that aspect in our natal charts.
For example when the Moon is at 19-20 degrees of Taurus in its monthly orbit through the zodiac, it will be conjunct to Sedna. Once that happens it may trigger for us emotional memories of events in our lives that were abusive. This would last for a day or so, but it might cause us to feel some unresolved grief issues surrounding that abuse.
Now let’s take a look at what to expect when the other planets make contact with Sedna at the 19-20 degree point.
Moon: Discussed above.
Sun: Around the 10th or 11th of every month. When "Desperate Housewives" actress Terri Hatcher told her story of the sexual abuse she suffered as a child to a major magazine the story broke on the newswires on March 9th, 2006, and the Sun was in Pisces, Sextile to Sedna. Sun aspects to Sedna will give us the confidence we need to tell our stories, and to come to terms with them.
Favorable aspects to Sedna occur when a planet or luminary is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, or Pisces. We will feel able to come to terms with our past experiences, whether we choose to share them with others or not.
Difficult aspects, which occur when a planet or luminary is in Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, or Aquarius, will make it more difficult for us to accept certain situations in our past. We need to be kind to ourselves at those times, and know that healing, along with forgiveness for those we feel have hurt us, will come to us when the time is right. We don’t need to follow an agenda, or someone else’s script. Each one of us has our own timetable, and that needs to be honored and respected.
Mercury, Venus, Mars: Varies throughout the year. Mercury hitting Sedna degrees will bring mental clarity for us on our issues, Venus will encourage us to seek out support from those we love, and Mars will allow us to feel any anger we may have, and then let it go.
Jupiter: A friend, relative or acquaintance may share their own stories with us, and it may be our turn to offer guidance to someone who has had some of the same experiences we did. Jupiter contacts Sedna: Scorpio: October 4-13, 2006, opposite Sedna. Sagittarius: March 15-April 28, 2007, October 29-November 7, 2007; Inconjunct. Capricorn: March 23-April 9, 2008; June 9-June 27, 2008; November 15-25 2008, Trine.
Saturn: We may decide we need to get extra help to clarify and deal with past issues of abuse, and decide to look into counseling, or enter a group or 12 step program for additional support. Saturn contacts Sedna: Leo: September 10-27, 2006; Feb. 19-March 19, 2007; May 21-June 17, 2007, Square. Virgo: November 5-December 2, 2008, Trine.
Uranus: During Uranus’ contact to Sedna, which occurs on the dates listed below, we may explore alternative methods of healing, as in Reiki or aromatherapy. Pisces: March 16-April 21, 2008; September 5-November 2, 2008; December 23-31, 2008, Sextile.
Neptune: Neptune aspecting Sedna can give us a sense of being flooded or overwhelmed with vague feelings of regret and loss, and we might start to unconsciously relive our painful experiences. Soothing ourselves with long walks by the sea, journaling, and calling on help from family, friends, and counselors could be in order, if needed. Neptune contacts Sedna: Aquarius: March 28-July 20, 2006; January 27-March 22, 2007; August 1, 2007- January 22, 2008. Square to Sedna.
Pluto: Not applicable, doesn’t connect with Sedna until 2017
